There have been many changes at Heavenly Bounty in the last month. I will start with the 19 baby chick we got (most) from eggs a friend got from us who is a 1 grade teacher. Part of the chicks are Americana and some are something else. Here is are pictures of them when they came home at about 3 weeks old.
Well time passed and we (my husband and I) fixed an area of the chicken house just for them but close to the grown chickens. This area is about 8' x 16'. They remained in this area for a little while so we could start the next faze of getting ready for the additions. Pictures to follow of that phase. While they are in this are they have really grown. Mitzi goes with me each and every morning and night (unless it is muddy) to make sure HER babies are okay. She is a hoot.
The next phase is to build a rabbit/poultry fence around the 2 acre section of pasture so the chickens once again could be out and running free. Now there is a story as to why they are not running free at this time. That would be because they will not stay out of my garden and 2 years ago ate almost all my cantaloupe and watermelon. So after a lot of looking and pricing and thinking about what I was wanting to accomplish I settled on rabbit/poultry fencing. I am blessed with a neighbor who is gracious enough to put up with me changing my mind and choosing to do things he has never done. This time though my husband was kind enough to help construct this fence. It was a major project! Pictures are below of the progress and also the chickens big and little being allow to be in new areas to them. The big ones are now, during the daytime out in the 2 acre area and the little ones are in the first fence built for the larger ones.
Because, I now have a area of garden that I don't have to worry about chickens getting it has opened up some more options for me. One of the things it allowed me to do is finish the next section of walkway in the garden which is a wonderful thing. I will now have areas to plant running beans or peas on. I had this before but it was y not very workable and so I did not use it very much. I am including pictures of the garden as it is even though there are things I still have to accomplish in order to have it the way I want it to be. While Jerry was finishing up on the fence I worked on the next walkway I needed to accomplish. Below are some pictures of the garden with the new walkway. Oh so many things I need to do but I am praising God for the things that have been accomplished this year.
Above is a picture of the walkway with the weedex laid and ready to be topped with mulch. The next section is a picture of the walkway finished. The next section I am working on in the garden is the area just past the concrete blocks on the right side. Now that the fence is finished I will have an area I can plant climbing beans or peas. I am so excited since there is an area between the panels for plants to climb on and the new fence where I will have another walkway. This will enable me to pick from either side and also keep me from having to spend so much time weeding. One of the things Mom used to say is "A stitch in time saves nine" Oh, what a smart woman she was and it applied to so many areas of life. I will try to take pictures along as it progresses. Now for some maintenance.
